Iceman Brutus winning the Ladbroke 630 Gold Cup in 2007 out of the 2 trap

Iceman Brutus* is the most accomplished son of Toms The Best imported to the U.S. He was a multiple Group 1 finalist scoring wins in the 2007 ZigZag Puppy Championship at Coventry over 525 yards and the 2007 Ladbrokes Gold Cup at Monmore. He ran second in the 2008 Yorkshire St. Leger at Stainforth and made the final of the 2007 William Hill St. Leger at Wimbledon. At Monmore he eclipsed the two year-old track record of the great Westmead Hawk, covering 689 yards in 37.07. Overall, he compiled a record of 25-13-7 in 58 career starts. He never ran a graded race.

He is from an outstanding pair of litters by Toms The Best out of Any Chewing Gum that includes older brothers Louis Saha, winner of the Group 1 2002 Gymcrack Puppy Stake, and Kanoute, second in the Group 1 Irish Cesarewitch at Mullingar and made the Irish Derby Consolation in 2003. He also set the 600 yard track record of 32.93 at Mullingar in 2003. Another brother, Armani Sapphire, won the Group 2 Videx Puppy Derby at Walthamstow.

Toms The Best is the only dog to ever win both the English and Irish Derbies. Only a loss in the Scottish Derby by less than a length to Larkhill Jo prevented him from capturing the “impossible” triple crown of the three most prestigious sprint derbies. He emerged as a tremendous sire of stayers, leading the British Open Race stayers Sire Standings for several years running. Toms The Best lines are ideally suited to U.S. breeding because of their strength and determination. His sire Frightful Flash* was the dog who started the deluge of succesful Australian sires in Ireland. He descends from the same Eaglehawk Star line as Smooth Rumble*, sire of Maryville Rumble*.

Any Chewing Gum is by Trade Official out of Blonde Slippy. In addition to her outstanding pups by Toms The Best, she produced a fine litter by Smooth Rumble* that included Group 1 2003 Produce Stakes finalist Toosey Flyer and 2003 Videx Puppy Derby finalist Toosey Jay. Blonde Slippy is also the dam of Blonde Returns, by Phantom Flash, dam of a string of stars that includes Ballymac Kewell, Ballymac Pires, Ballymac Floss, Killeacle Phoebe, Ballymac Bargain, and Ballymac Returns. In all, an astonishing nine of her offspring made Group 1 finals. Another Blonde Returns son, Ballymac Maeve, injured early in his career, has been successful in the stud barn siring Ballymac Under and Ballymac Ruso. Another Blonde Slippy daughter, Due In June, is the dam of the fleet King’s Cadet*, exported to Australia to stand at stud.

The pedigree of their damsire Murlens Slippy should be familiar to most American breeders as it is very similar to that of Fortress*, being by I’m Slippy out of the Maythorn Pride damline. In addition to Iceman Brutus*, he can be found in the pedigrees of stars such as Premier Fantasy, Droopys Maldini, Maryville Rumble*, Caloona Striker and many, many others. Note that his third damsire, Yellow Ese*, is an American import. He is a son of the great Yellow Printer* and 1971 American Derby finalist Cellanese. She descends from the same damline that produced PK’s Jet, Oshkosh Station, Oshkosh Racey and Evening Memory among others.

Iceman Brutus’s running style can best be described as an early-paced stayer. He had enough early pace to win top-class 525 yard sprints, yet could stay well beyond 700 yards. Unlike most imports, he can be bred with confidence even to early-speed females.
